The 1971 Eisenhower Dollar was thought to honor the great general and president following Dwight D. Eisenhower’s death in 1969. The legislation to strike a new dollar coin honoring the former president and general was signed by President Richard Nixon in 1970. This would be the first official dollar coin struck by the United States Mint since. The common version is the 1971 Brilliant Uncirculated silver Eisenhower Dollar (as depicted above) which came in the blue pack/envelope with a blue seal ('Blue Ikes'). These were special mint condition coins sold to collectors. Sheila, the Denver-minted Eisenhower dollars are of the copper/nickel variety. In a high uncirculated or proof grade they can fetch some good money. Additional Info: The numbers and values above are for the S (San Francisco) minted 1971 Ike Dollars. If you look at the mintage numbers you can see only 6.8 million of these were issued. Compare that number to the 68 million issued in Denver that year and you can see how rare the S minted Eisenhower dollars are. This is because congress only agreed to issue limited 40% silver dollars and these were to be included in collector sets sold by the mint.
